5 Happy Habits to Develop in the New Year at Home

Have you ever found yourself, stressing out about how to make your home better for others but not yourself? You worry about if someone will notice the crack in the wall when they walk in, or dislike the furniture arrangement. What about what you like? Are your New Year's Resolutions for your home designed solely around impressing others? Well it shouldn't be. It should be about making yourself better through time spent at home. Read through and see which ideas appeal to you, which are realistic, and which ones spark different ideas you can pursue. 1. Designate a specific daily ritual for yourself

Personally, ever since my first job, I have decided that I will begin my "productivity" after having what I like to call, "my morning cup of something hot". Whether it's coffee, cocoa or tea, I have to have something hot to drink in the morning. Sometimes it's really more about the quiet time than the drink. Unfortunately, I can't drink my coffee without some sort of interruption (I've also had to cut back on the caffiene because of health reasons, and it's way too hot to drink it on my commute; although I'm also never sitting in traffic long enough to take a sip). Your ritual could be anything that brings you pleasure or peace, even if just for a few minutes.

2. Set aside a specific time in the week to do something you love

This ties in with the first point. If you're a student like me with a full-time job, you know how precious having a hobby can be. But remember, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Set aside a time in your home when you can do something you love. Maybe it's listening to music. Maybe it's sewing or tinkering. Whatever it is, set a time. But if you live with others and have a noisy hobby, make sure that time is considerate of others.

3. Use the 'good' dish towels

Are you one of those people that waits for someone to come over to break out the good china? Go ahead - use the "nice" soap, light those spendy candles, break out the fabric napkins. Treat yourself well at home. Too often we squirrel away little luxuries at home and only bring them out for company. Let your home provide you with small pleasures; you deserve them.

4. Try a new recipe at least once a week

Cooking, even for people who love to do it, can be a grind when it's a daily obligation and particularly when it's on you to feed your family. Have you ever dreamed of trying that recipe you saw on Rachel Ray but your kids just want Chicken Nuggets for dinner.....AGAIN! If you can, try a new recipe as often as you can that is not completely utilitarian, even something simple like salted avocado spread on toast. It may help you reconnect with the parts of cooking you do like and, of course, the eating of it will bring you enjoyment in the short term.

5. Choose one "chore-free" day

Sometimes we'd love to have a weekend free of chores. Heck, we'd all love to have a weekend free of chores. But don't think your chore-free day has to be on the weekend. It could be any day really. Try to condense your household chores to one day, that suits your needs. This way your day is reserved for being home, not cleaning home.

Are you going to try any of these ideas?

Comment below on the ones you think you can start in your life.
