Yesterday was wash day. And let me admit, that I was so over it well into the first hour!

I never spend an entire day washing my hair. Even after being natural for a year, for some reason I’m still convinced that I can continue washing my hair the same way I did when my hair was permed. But one of my best friends from church, Catina, finally convinced me that I was doing it all wrong and agreed to show me the right way to do it.

She started by parting my hair into four and detangling (after telling me that I was using the wrong comb). And then, section by section, she washed my hair with my Garnier Fructis Color Protection Shampoo, rinsed then put it back in the hair tie. After that, she went back around and used my Garnier Fructis Length & Strength Conditioner on each section. On the last section, she used my Pantene Pro-V Relaxed and Natural Breakage Defence Conditioner. Catina found that she liked the pantene pro-v conditioner for my hair better so I’ll buy more of that.

Then it was finally time to try my homemade avocado deep conditioning treatment. My hair was brittle dry which was why I put so much emphasis on conditioning. I realised afterwards that I forgot to add the aloe vera juice, so next time, I’ll let you know if I notice a difference. After thirty minutes, we rinsed, section by section and then used my Simply Shea Curl Stretch Cream to braid each section. I loved my results! My hair was so soft! After sealing the moisture with coconut oil, I noticed extra silky smooth hair that I haven’t felt since going to a salon. The best part? My curl stretch cream costs only $1 from The Dollar Tree!

And since I’ve been natural for a little over a year, it was time for a length check. When I big chopped, I was left with 4 inches of hair and not much stretch, now my hair is only 3 inches shy of the middle of my back! I’m so proud of my growth. I definitely think it’s due to a mixture of using natural products and protective styling. Now, here’s how I made my homemade deep conditioner and why I chose each ingredient.

DIY: Homemade Avocado Deep Hair Conditioner

Avocados are known to rejuvenate and treat itchy and flaky scalp. They make your scalp smoother by putting in lots of hydration. Conditioning your hair with avocados is one of the best ways to treat and rejuvenate lifeless and lustreless hair and barren scalp. Mix all of the ingredients in a food processor, apply to hair and leave on for 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 fully ripened avocado

  • 2-3 tbsp honey

  • 1 tsp coconut milk

  • ¼ cup aloe vera juice

About the Ingredients

1. Avocado

It is one of the main ingredients in the recipe and its benefits have been discussed above.

2. Honey

Honey is a natural antiseptic and anti-bacterial. Besides, it cleanses scalp and moisturizes it from within to make it soft, smooth, and supple.

3. Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is an excellent hair moisturizer even when you don’t mix it with any other organic compound. The coconut milk acts as a natural hair conditioner to give you longer hair and greater volume. Coconut milk can also treat dry scalp. If you have some coconut milk left after the treatment, you can keep it in the refrigerator. The milk will stay fresh for about 2 days. It is, however, recommended that you simply make another bowl of fresh coconut milk for every treatment. If you cannot find fresh coconut fruits, you can use the canned milk as well.

4. Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera is calming and soothing in nature for it efficaciously soothes and tones your scalp while making it less sensitive, smooth and less flaky.
