Your home is your castle, whether you are a man or a woman, and as such, should be decked out like a castle. This doesn’t mean that you need large statues of knights lining your walls, but it does mean there are some items your home – and every home – should have. You may think that these items are unattainable, but that’s where you’re wrong. No matter what your budget is, there are ways for you to get these ten things that every home should have. Read on to learn about the items your home is missing.
Every home needs certain things to make it comfortable, liveable, and on-trend. Here are 10 things we think your home should have.

Real Napkins:
I love cloth napkins. They make even the most casual snack or meal feel more special. Organic and geometric patterns are definitely not bipartisan; they mix together beautifully! Good-looking motifs like chevrons, triangles, squares, herringbone and origami birds make it hard to choose!
A Landing Strip:
I don't consider a home complete unless it has an area near the front door - it can be tiny - that acts as a "landing strip" where you can hang your coat and drop your keys and mail when you walk in. You can make it extra nice by adding a mirror, wastepaper basket and coat hooks.
Simple & Beautiful Flatware Sets:
Buying or receiving good-quality, matching spoons, forks, and knives goes a long way to setting a nice table and feeling like an adult.
I quickly realized that the frequency with which you use your flatware makes the investment in a quality set very worthwhile. If you buy something simple and beautiful that's well made, you won't have to purchase any others for a long time.
Pitchers:
If you're hosting a dinner party or having cocktails with friends, there's nothing like a pitcher to save you from running back and forth from the kitchen. Plus, whether you're making large batches of cocktails, or simply serving juice or water, a beautiful pitcher manages to make serving drinks feel stylish.
Lights in Every Room:
Many homes are actually under-lit. They can be lovely to look at, but they're dark and filled with shadows. I'm convinced that most people don't notice this about their own home as they get used to it. Or consider it to be a style. The simple solution is to make sure that you have at least three points of light in EVERY room and that you turn them on when you're home. Whether it be a big window, or artificial lighting with lamps, good lighting does wonders for opening up a space (and photographs well too).
Plants & Fresh flowers:
I’ve never been an advocate for having fresh flowers in the home (due to allergies) but I find they bring an indescribable liveliness and beauty to an interior, regardless of its chic-ness or fashionability. Plants, whether indoor or outdoor, are a part of this as well. Not only do they beautify the place, but many plants actually have health benefits. But when it comes to keeping them alive, I’ll leave that to my mother. She’s the one with the green thumb.
An Amazing Mattress
There is nothing more important in your home than the mattress you sleep on each night. It is one area of your home that you should definitely splurge.
Take the time to test out a few mattresses and find what fits your body and sleeping habits the best. From those made of memory foam to those with temperature controls, an amazing mattress is something that every home should have.
After all, it is the place you go to rest after a long, hard day at work. It should be inviting, comforting, and down-right amazing.
Artwork in Your Home
Some people get overwhelmed when choosing art for their homes and some will pick up the first thing in a frame just to cover the empty space on the walls. You can make the search for art much simpler, however, and choose a piece that speaks to you. It doesn’t have to be a pricey piece, just something that shows off your personality. If you like coffee (like me), maybe a quirky generic painting of coffee mugs will hang nicely in your kitchen. Artwork doesn’t have to be serious, deep and meaningful. If it means something to you, that’s what makes it meaningful. So whether it’s a conversation piece or just a space-filler, have fun with it!
Decent Window Treatments
No shade to my friends (pardon the pun), but a lot of them who are new homeowners or renters, seem to settle for hanging old sheets as curtains. Not only does this look cheap, but it serves virtually no purpose, because as soon as they turn the light on, you can see straight into the house.
Aside from pulling the curtains closed for privacy, there are other benefits to having window treatments. This includes controlling the amount of light in your home, and adding an additional layer of insulation for your home, which reduces energy bills all year long. Lastly, having window treatments really adds to the décor in your home, enhancing the style. You can choose one simple window treatment, or combine different types to create a desired appearance.
Security Features
Whether it is a fire extinguisher, safety rail, or security alarm, every home needs some sort of security feature. The older we get more aware and concerned we are about the safety of our family. Studies show that most accidents and injuries at home. No matter the cost, preparing your family for a storm, home invasion, water or food shortage is really in your best interest. Taking the necessary precautions is the mature thing to do and actually THE most essential thing every home should have.
