How I Spent My Memorial Day/Whit Monday Holiday

Hey everyone!

Did you have a good holiday? For a lot of you out there, it was Memorial Day, but for us, in the Bahamas, it was Whit Monday yesterday. You're probably wondering what the heck that is. First of all, Whit Monday is a moveable holiday, it's never the same date every year (like how we all know that Christmas is the 25th December no matter which day of the week it is). This is because Whit Monday is a religious holiday; the day after Pentecost to be specific.

On this day the Holy Spirit visited the disciples and inspired them to go out and preach the word of Christ. For this reason the day is celebrated as the anniversary of the birth of the Christian church. Traditionally a time of baptism, the alternative name Whit Sunday, or White Sunday, derives from the custom of wearing white while being baptized. Whit Monday (the bank holiday) was of course the following day.

One of the great things about living in a self-proclaimed Christian nation is that we get all of the Christian religious holidays! (It's even better when you work in an Anglican school or any other Christian organisation). This isn't one of those days spent in church though.

I spent my holiday weekend shopping and relaxing on the beach (before taking down my hair and styling it again for work today). On Saturday, mum and I went to a hotel sale, one of the hotels on the island had a sale to get rid of old stuff; this happens periodically. But the stuff they were selling was old, it wasn't even worth giving away much less purchasing. So we hopped over to Doongalik Studios who was also having a sale. It was so much fun! I ran into two friends of mine, Anuschka and Rayne and together with my mum, we shopped til our heart's content!

I walked away with a Donney & Burke handbag for only $7, two glass pitchers for $10 and two bracelets, and a necklace and earring set for a total of $20.

Think that's a pretty good buy for only $37! Wouln't you agree?

We then went for lunch and drinks. I got a platter of conch fritters, grouper fingers and sweet potato fries!

Then there was the Whit Monday holiday!

I went to the beach with some friends and had fun relaxing on the sand and in the water. We had a bucket of Kalik and a camera full of selfies! Then it was off to wash and fix my hair!

Can you tell that this was my favourite picture of the day?
