Fall is that magical time of year when everything changes! We may not always like the changes that are made, but throughout all, we must maintain a grateful demeanor. I've found that no matter how bad things get, it will always get better. Even if only by 10%. Don't overlook the 10% improvement. You improved by 10% is better than a stagnant, unchange You.
There are many ways we can change, but today I'm focusing on changing your diet, from summery fruits and treats, to fall flavours! And because I'm just so generous and loving (just showing some self-love), I've compiled a simple list of the Top 6 fruits and vegetables I look for at the fresh market during the fall season. You'll find that almost every fall recipe you want to do relies on these 6 ingredients.
Starting with my Favourite:
Pumpkins:
Dunkin Donuts is giving me LIFE with their pumpkin flavoured coffees! It's no secret that pumpkin is the reason for the season! There are many recipes you can try, using pumpkin. Like these Pumpkin Waffles, or Pumpkin Butterscoth Cake Shakes.
2. Apples
Apples are my third favourite fruit (after strawberries and bananas). Although they're available all year round, the best ones are available from September through November. Pick a firm, round one, free of bruises. And remember, red apples are sweet, and in my opinion, the best to bake with. Fun recipes include: Apple Pie French Toast, Apple Rings, and Apple sauce mac & cheese with apple sausage.
3. Mushrooms
Mushrooms are also available year-round, but many are at their best in fall and winter. They’re very satisfying, and a great, healthy way to add earthy flavor to any meal. If you need some mushroom inspiration, check out the Portobello Turkey Burger or the Thin Crust Ricotta and Mushroom Pizza.
4. Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes are not only delicious, but they’re also full of nutrients like Iron and Vitamin A. While they’re great when prepared simply (just throw them in the oven to bake), why not treat yourself to one of these fancyful recipes: Open-Faced Sweet Potato-Mushroom Sandwiches, and Chai Sweet Potato Cupcakes .
5. Corn
Everytime I think about harvest time, I picture little corn on the cobs. Corn is probably the second reason for the season. Celebrate with this cool Mexican Street Corn Salad or the classic Potato Corn & Bacon Chowder.
6. Butternut Squash
Last but not least is squash! This popular winter squash has a deep orange flesh and nutty flavor that’s perfect for fall dishes. If you're looking for a modern spin on this classic, try the Butternut Squash Ricotta Stuffed Shells or Butternut Squash Lasagna.
